Engaging Black Colorectal Cancer Patients and Caregivers
PALTOWN and BLKHLTH are excited to launch a project to address barriers experienced by Black colorectal cancer patients and caregivers in accessing support and disease education.
In the first phase of this project, we brought together patients, caregivers, and providers from Black communities for two events:
- Community Conversations: Pathways to Support for Black Colorectal Cancer Patients (virtual)
- Community Conversations: Early Onset Colorectal Cancer (in person, Atlanta, GA)
Both events focused on identifying barriers that Black patients and caregivers experience in accessing and engaging patient support and education. Participants at each event discussed strategies for improving access and connection to available colorectal cancer resources for Black patients and caregivers.
The panel discussion portion of our kickoff conversation is now available in COLONTOWN University’s Lecture Hall.
The purpose of this event was to bring together patients, caregivers, survivors, providers, and advocates to:
- Raise awareness about psycho-social support, including existing psycho-social support resources available for Black CRC patients, caregivers, and survivors.
- Identify barriers that Black CRC patients, caregivers, and survivors experience when seeking and receiving support.
- Strategize solutions for improving awareness of, access to, and engagement with psycho-social support for Black CRC patients, caregivers, and survivors.
2025: Based on insights from the events, PALTOWN and BLKHLTH are now developing pilot projects to test community-informed approaches to engaging Black patients and caregivers with the resources offered by patient-centered groups.

It is our belief that designing and implementing effective strategies to connect Black colorectal cancer patients and caregivers with support and education resources can contribute to improved outcomes for Black Americans facing a diagnosis of CRC.
